Albrecht Dürer was originally taught to draw by his father. As a goldsmith to trade, he seems to have implanted his craft's appreciation of fine detail into the young artist. Although Dürer, a German from Nuremberg, became one of the greatest painters of the Northern Renaissance, he is equally famous for his body of graphic work in printmaking and illustration.

Dürer was one of the first artists to view animals as a subject worthy of attention. At the beginning of the 16th century, the natural world of animals and plants was becoming a focus of interest as explorers and travelers were returning from distant lands with examples and illustrations of new species. Dürer shared this fascination for the subject which he revealed in many of his drawings, watercolours and prints.

Quilt History.

I'm delighted to introduce this great magazine, Quiltmania
It has some very interesting articles and one in particular, Inlaid Patchwork in Europe from 1500 to present.
I've been studying the technique for many years, it's quite a difficult technique.
My quilt, 1776, Heartache, Heritage and Happiness, was re-created from an inlaid applique quilt made in 1776 in Prussia.

202 horses and riders 
553 other fauna and animals
64 mythical creatures
353 Latin words

might explain those sentiments. !!!!!

Just who is "Anybody"?

At a lecture today I met a lady who made the comment.... "I remember you before you were anybody"?

Well really just who is "Anybody", what does that mean?

It was a nice comment, and let me to share with you the reflective Notebook I have been writing over the past few months which relates to the subject of "Anybody"

Medieval Applique

Our class today was Medieval Appliqué.

The picture shown first is a 6" block illustrated with black pigma pen... then just the letter A appliquéd over the top.

History is my passion and as I delve more and more into Medieval times I find the most interesting graphics that could be adapted to quilting.
My theory is that if you can draw it you can use fabric to illustrate it. Manuscripts are books that were written and illustrated by hand in the Medieval period. AD 500 to around 1200. 

They represented major religious, social, and artistic beliefs of the period.  Because manuscripts were very expensive to make, they often served as status symbols.  Most people who owned

manuscripts held high-ranking positions in society.  The major
themes of manuscripts were religion (particularly Christianity), art, and literary characters.

I love the colors, the rich texture of the letters intermingling with classical design.

We only had a day, the everyone achieved a letter so they did well.
